SENDER innovation

The SENDER innovation can program household consumption not only to make it more efficient, but also to spread European citizens’ consumption over time, in order to avoid demand peaks and, consequently, the inclusion of a larger share of fossil energy. The SENDER innovation will be able to shift consumption at the optimum time, depending on the specific features of each country and each participant (energy prices, consumption habits, weather conditions, etc.).

The project’s innovation actually comprises a set of tools making up the SENDER system (or SENDER smart kit):

SENDER smart box

A Raspberry Pi reads data and sends information about the energy usage at home.


capable of switching appliances on and off according to the user’s needs, energy prices and photovoltaic production (if applicable).

SENDER sensors and actuators

keep track of the temperature, humidity, light level and occupancy of the rooms, and turn on and off the devices.

SENDER shared cloud

collects and stores water consumption data for analysis and modeling, to improve energy use.

SENDER smart boilers

provide wireless information on remaining hot water and potential energy production to adjust the most efficient times for heating water.

How will these data be treated, and what will it be used for?

Collected data will be stored and protected by the organisations running the pilots (Eléctrica d’Alginet in Spain, VTT in Finland, Weiz Innovation Centre in Austria). For the purpose of research, these data will be fully anonymised and then shared with the other partners of the consortium, to analyse them.

The analysis of the data is aimed at understanding deeply how different houses consume energy, and what opportunities there are to enhance their energy efficiency through the SENDER automation and monitoring devices. Likewise, the analysis will seek to generate conclusions regarding how much the scheduling of domestic energy consumption can assist the grid to better manage periods of peak demand, and to reduce its dependency on fossil fuel energy.
